21st Slay [Video] Ain't gonna go to work no more.

[There's a very up close shot of Buffy's face. It pulls out to show a punching bag that's been broken off it's chain. The target on the wall has a cluster of throwing knives at the bulls eye. The training dummy is more splinters than training dummy. Someone has been venting rage and pain. She's never killed a human before. She's killed vampires, demons, witches and things she can't name but never anyone entirely human. It's about the advantage she has over people--the whole using her power for good not evil thing.]

I quit.

[And she turns the camera off]

[This still isn't working for Dawn. She's so confused. So she waits another moment before shaking her head again and placing her hands on her hips.]

Who is they? Cause the watchers and the PTB's aren't here in the City, only the Deities are. And they don't let you decide to quit I think? I think it's pretty much a when they want to curse you thing. So what exactly are you quitting?

Fighting. I'm not going to kill things for them anymore. I save people. I don't hurt them. At least that's not what I'm supposed to be doing.

But if you're not fighting who's gonna keep us safe?

[She might have sounded like a very young version of herself right there and she knew it. But a part of her couldn't help in the quick sand of confusion that was this conversation. So to make herself sound older again, she posed another challenge, one more relevant to the now.]

When things go wrong who's gonna lead us to the whole world savey thing?

Things are always going wrong here, Dawn. Besides...Faith is here and Spike.

[That isn't at all what she'd expected to hear. Not that she knew what she'd expected, but whatever it was, it wasn't that. It reminds her too much of when Buffy had been all invisible and not caring and it just feels -- the opposite of right. She backs up a few steps back into the hallway.]

Things are always going wrong at home too. Things just keep coming and coming and yeah, if you need to take a day or two off, I could understand that. Even the fighters of evil need a vacation. But they don't quit, Buffy and wow I feel like I'm giving you one of your own speeches.

I always felt lame giving those speeches.

[That gets her an eye roll cause seriously? Buffy was superior and righteous giving those speeches and she knew it. Lame was that pig she used to sleep with even in high school. The speeches were beneficial and productive and motivational and all that jazz.]

Seriously? Because it seemed like you really believed what you were saying when you said them. It was all grand standing and just -- words for the sake of words?

[If that's truth then she's totally looking at you in a different light, Buffy.]

I do believe everything I said. That doesn't change that I feel like a giant lame-o saying it. The situation isn't the same here, Dawn. Nothing is the same here. The rules don't apply and it's all this game for the deities to judge. I'm tired of it. I'm opting out of the game. I won't kill pe-things for thing. [She bites her lips, tucking them between her teeth to stop more words from coming out]

So you're opting out of being the Slayer and she who saves us all a lot because some deities controlled you into doing something that you wouldn't have normally done and didn't at all want to do. That's the gist of this whole thing, right? Kind of like when Xander was forced into hyena-ness and said all those mean things or when you were forced into thinking we were all figments of your imagination and almost killed us all in the basement or -- I don't know, the list could go on. And that's the whole point. It goes on and we go on too.

[Yep, still feeling like the older, stronger sister here. And really, it doesn't feel so bad! Of course after awhile it could get old but for now, she can handle it.]

Except no one died then, Dawn. Don't pretend you know what this is about.

[Still feeling pissed off, righteous and oh yeah like it's her life to make a decision about]

[Yeah, way to put Dawn in her place, Buffy. First there's hurt. Then anger as she decides to quit trying to help.]

Score one for the Summers girls then cause I'm apparently clueless and you're a quitter. Go us.

[And with that, she turns to stomp away in a way that only a little sister can with a big sister. Down the hallway is the sound of her door slamming shut.]

You can't make this a general thing because it's not!

[And for the moment she's going to let Dawn be because they both need some time to think this through]
