writers_muses Prompt set #17: An Eye for and Eye
"You realize, of course, that an eye for an eye won't be enough. I want him dead."
Takes place immediately after When She Was Bad in S2 of Btvs
Long after Willow, Xander, and Giles had gone home, Angel remained. He lingered outside her bedroom window, just out of her line of sight. She knew he was there though. She could feel him tickling up her spine and raising the hair on the back of her neck.
He’d come through when she needed him. He’d let her fall apart in the safety of his arms and never made her feel weak for it. And that was why she walked over and slid open her window, leaning out to catch a shadow moving further away.
“Why don’t you come on in?”
There was a space of crystal still time and then the shadows gave up their bounty and he moved into sight. He hesitated at her window sill and she nodded.
“Mom is asleep and she won’t wake up. If she does I’ll hide you in my closet.”
It was all the encouragement he needed to step over the window sill and into her room. He looked out of place there, too dark, too big, too tall but she liked having him there, more than she would ever admit.
She wrapped her arms around herself and watched him from beneath her lashes. She considered waiting him out, letting him tell her why he was stalking but she suspected he could wait a very, very long time in silence.
“So…I kinda went for overkill…the whole grinding his bones to dust then with the burning them.”
Angel shrugged. “It helped you resolve what he did to you and move on. Besides…he did kill you.”
“I give eye for an eye a whole new meaning though,” she joked. As always, her moods were mercurial and she sobered again quickly. She gnawed on her bottom lip for a moment before she said the words that were obviously waiting just behind her teeth. “Thanks…for…letting me damsel.”
Angel gave her the briefest of smiles (his smiles were always brief she’d noticed) and shook his head. “It was nothing.”
And yet they both knew it was.
She nodded, allowing them both the illusion and licked her lips then nodded again. The silence lay between them, waiting to be pushed away but too heavy to do so.
“I’d better go…let you get some sleep.”
But it was in his voice, he knew she wouldn’t sleep tonight and she knew he wouldn’t really leave.
“Right…because school tomorrow.”
He nodded and slipped through her window sill. She moved behind him, leaning out just a moment before it slid shut. The shadows were waiting, watching, stalking and holding their secret safe.
Maybe she would sleep tonight.
