46th Slay [Action]

[Buffy is sitting out on the patio of the coffee shop. Instead of her usual mocha, she's got a pot of tea sitting on the table. She's got some fashion magazines with her and she's flipping through them but really, she's watching the incoming crowd of people. She's definitely looking for people from Sunnydale but she'll welcome any distractions in the form of visitors.]

[Oh look. Tall, dark, brooding and Angel looking very confused. After what she's been through with him, her first instinct is to turn the other direction simply because looking at him is hard right now and yet, it's still Angel. She stands up, abandoning her tea and takes a couple of steps toward him. Her voice, when she finally speaks, is more of a croak than anything. Really, it's likely anyone human wouldn't have heard her given that she's still several feet from him.]

Angel. [No question in his name. She'd know him anywhere whether she likes it or not.]

[ whatever happens is a long way off for this angel, who hasn't even left sunnydale for good ol' los angeles or even discovered he could lose his soul, yet. for the best, perhaps. ]

Buffy. [ a brief, warm smile, then business. ] This isn't Sunnydale.

[More hesitation but she does take a couple of steps toward him. It's pretty clear by his demeanor and manner that he's from earlier than she is. Possibly much later but she's getting earlier vibe. Also with the mention of Sunnydale. She gives him a soft smile and shakes her head.]

Nope. The City. It's...parallel universe or something very Twilight Zone without the weird music and as far as I know, no monster on airplane wings. Or airplanes come to think of it which would be pointless with the lack of other Cities to go to.

[They've got loads of time until dawn so she'll hold off the offering of basements and blood delivery until later.]

[ the hesitation is noted, and angel's not sure what to attribute it to -- the situation, however, takes precedence over his confusion, so he'll ask about that later. getting a grip on what's going on her first is more important. ]

Another dimension. Huh. First time for everything.

[She shrugs, hers arms crossing, wrapping around her waist.]

Well Anya kept harping on it so I should have really listened. At least the world isn't made of shrimp.

[Hesitation is the theme for the moment.] Uhm so...also timelines with the dimensions and maybe a first. What's happening back home?

[ ...none of that first part makes any sense to him. ]

The Gorch brothers had-- Who's Anya?

[Oh...he's from so far back and now she's blushing a little and that is a nostalgic grin.]

Not--someone at school. [Which is technically true. Just later than his time.]

Do you want tea? Or a tour? Or...if you're hungry there's...we can get something for you here.

You never mentioned an Anya before. [ as uninterested as he may've seemed when she talked about her day, particularly that relating to the life of a modern teenager, he did listen. he remembered things and names, even if he didn't always understand what she was talking about. never an anya. he doesn't think much of it. ]

Why don't we start with what exactly is going on here.

New. One of Cordelia's friends. You know. [And also not in Sunnydale yet but she hadn't actually realized he listened to her that much.]

Oh. Right. Still with the confused. I sort of got ahead of--behind maybe in the middle of my--not important. The City. Welcome to but most likely just for a day or two. You've been temporarily abducted by deities. You'll get to go home Sunday night or so. Today is Saturday which is relevant to the going home.

[ that's a lot to take in at once, but he's going to focus on one thing for a moment: ] And you don't. You stay here.

[Leave it to Angel to notice what she didn't say. After a moment she slowly shakes her head.] Yeah. I've been here for a over a year.

...time has to be out of alignment, somehow. I just saw you.

[ and come to think of it, now that he gets a really good look at her, she looks older. that teenage youthfulness is gone, and she's blossomed into a beautiful young woman. how did he miss that? ]

How old are you?

Yeah. This place kind of does that.

[She dips her head a bit, adverting her gaze from the whole examination. It's not that she minds. It's more that she's not used to it.]

Twenty four which is sort of you know an accomplishment slayer style.

Twenty-four. I've missed almost a decade. How is that?

Timelines here are wonky. I think you got in on the really good part of the decade though. If that helps?

It definitely helps.

[ and as if to test the waters to see just how good the decade still is, angel steps up to her and slips his hand into hers. ]

[all the confusion and conflicting feelings ever. Really. She swallows hard at the way his hand feels in hers, cool and comforting and like eight years ago when everything was so much simpler. She doesn't pull away though. It's Angel. More importantly it's her Angel, before Prom and LA and her Mom dying and a forever that didn't happen. She ducks her head a bit, the ghost of a smile curving her lips as she lightly squeezes his hand back.]

Is it weird? Seeing me get older? I mean I always knew it would happen even without the missing almost decade.

[ angel senses something amiss, like he's out of step with something, but dismisses it as timelines not lining up. she's experienced things he'd yet to live through and he can only guess what those things are. when it comes down to it, the questions he finds himself wanting to ask aside, he's glad to see that she made it. for someone handed a destiny that tends to come with a pretty abysmal future with an under twenty-one life expectancy, she sure beat the odds. he always knew she would.

he shakes his head in answer, smiling as he gently squeezes her hand. ] No. It's different, but not weird. A good different.

[Definitely out of step with something. Probably with a lot but she's not going to deal with that right now. This Angel hasn't been there yet. He hasn't done any of that yet and she's not going to make him accountable for those things now. Besides, it's kind of nice to remember she used to have a life that was a lot simpler.] Okay then. Good different. And you're still...Angel.

[Which doesn't sound like a bad thing the way she says it.]

Always will be.

[ and from the point in time he hails from, he honestly believes that. he's not yet aware of even the perfect happiness clause in his curse and the possibility of losing the soul the gypsies gave back to him and becoming a soulless monster again. ]

[Her breath catches and she holds it a moment before nodding. She knows otherwise, in some ways, but she's not about to tell him that. It's not as if he'd remember anyway and it'd just ruin the day.]

Which is comforting. Like Mr. Gordo. I can always count on you to be you.

[And Mr. Gordo is at the bottom of the crater formerly known as Sunnydale so she'll take her 'I was sixteen once upon a time' comfort, thank you very much.]

Always.

[ and as far as this angel's concerned, that's how it'll be. this is where whistler directed him and where he feels, presently, he's supposed to be -- at her side, helping the slayer. only, it's more than that now and for the first time in a good century, angel feels like he has purpose again. a reason to be instead of simply existing, hollow, throughout the years without any sort of direction. ]

So, how 'bout that tour?

[Sometimes she wonders how different things would have been if they'd stayed this way. Of course there wasn't any way to stay this way, not with the curse and the loophole.]

Tour I can do. I know all the best dark alleys and creepy buildings in the City.

Will we be seeing any action in these alleys?

[ he means of the supernatural, needs-a-beat-down variety, of course. ]

[She's assuming that's what he means but she hasn't forgotten that in Sunnydale they were often the scene of other action.]

Maybe. I patrol every night so it keeps them pretty clear on the first level. The other levels after that are less friendly and less populated by humans so...I don't go there as often. It's more of a really feeling the slay vibe kind of place.
