WM #9: Arrogance

She knows that sometimes she’s arrogant and she can taste Xander’s envy. He wants to be the savior. He wants to be stronger and faster. He wants to be the one with a destiny. Willow understands better about the things she gives up and the things she’ll never have. Xander just sees what she is, not what she will never be.

Little things like

A mother.

A wife.

Finished.

Old.

She pushes herself a little harder, running beneath the moon until the trees are just a blur. Her muscles burn and her chest aches before she stops. She’s gone far beyond the city limits but she knows that with a few minutes rest she’ll be able to run the entire way back home.

Most of the time the weight of everything her powers force upon her keeps her humble; If that fails, then Cordelia can always be counted upon to offer a scathing insult that reminds Buffy of her place. But sometimes when the moon is full, vampires have been slain and the night is perfectly still, she forgets to be humble. She runs like this, underneath the eye of the moon and shouts to the stars.

“I’m the strongest!”

“I’m the fastest!”

“I’m the best they’ve ever seen.”

And it’s nice to luxuriate in her abilities for a little while. It’s wonderful to enjoy being the slayer because she knows destiny will sneak up and knock her down a peg. Her arrogance is always temporary.
