Prompt Set #15 Brusies for
writers_muses
ooc: Set sometime during season 7
She looks in the mirror, a frown creasing her features as she trails her fingertips over her jaw line. An ugly bruise blooms there, blue and purple against skin that is too pale. It has been so long since she was out in the sun and that bothers her. Angel left so long ago because he wanted her to walk in the light. Instead she’s become as nocturnal as the creatures she hunts.
With a sigh, Buffy retrieves the stage makeup she keeps hidden in the false bottom of her vanity drawer. It doesn’t take long to blend it into her skin and cover the evidence of last night’s patrol. When it’s finished she throws open the curtains and lets sunlight spill in. Tilting her head every which way, she examines her work in the mirror. Sunlight always tells the truth and the truth is that even with cover up there’s a shadow of the bruise but it’s the best that she can do.
Her healing is top notch, faster than anything else human but there are some things that even it can not mend in the few hours of sleep she gets every night. There’s no one to meet and nowhere to go but Willow and Xander are downstairs having breakfast with Dawn and they expect her to be Super Healing Buffy. Bruises and cuts, scrapes and scars reveal her mortality, just like the sunlight reveals her weakness. Willow, Xander and Dawnie are uncomfortable with the idea that one day she won’t be so she uses the stage makeup, she puts on a cardboard smile and she acts like she hasn’t a care in the world.
It’s a lie. It is always a lie but they don’t want to see the truth.
