[There's a tiny, unassuming blonde fighting for her life. She's got a gash above her eyebrow that looks hours old. A heavy fist catches her under the jaw and she stumbles back, her head hitting a tree. She goes still, tension leaving her body. Her opponent advances, a knife in his hand. The blade comes toward her throat, the man leaning over her body. Buffy's eyes fly open and she grabs the man's shirt, shooting her knee up into his gut]

Boys. You just can't resist a fall and faint.

[There's an audible crunch when she slams his hand hard into the ground, rolls to her feet while simultaneously forcing him to his back. The sharp heel of her boot digs into his throat.]

My bad. I thought I could try the whole damsel in distress thing. Turns out I still suck at it.

[She removes her heel only to kick him hard enough in the temple that he goes unconscious.]

It's like Homecoming all over again.

[Dawn stares at him for a moment, glances at the two windows in her bedroom and then back to him.]

She's out there fighting all those people by herself, Xander. I'm surprised you don't wanna go help her too.

Do you not remember back in Sunnydale? I'd been asked to make sure you don't do anything stupid. So I did it. Guess what? Now? Here? I do it without being asked. Buffy can handle herself.

[Without a word, her lips thin together, her hand grips the bag of weapons and she starts for the door intent on moving around Xander.]

[He doesn't move. And he will restrain her if he has to.] You can't go in there. What if something happened to you? I'd never forgive myself.

[She looks up at him.]

Something happens to us all the time, Xander. It's what we do. We help Buffy.

This time isn't one of those "We help Buffy" times.

[A hand on his shoulder and she's trying to move him out of the way.]

When there's a distinction that involves your death? Yeah, that's a pretty damn big distinction.

[She pushes a little harder on his shoulder.]

[She turns on her heel and moves to one of the windows, pushing it open and starting to go through it to the outside.]

Dawn! [That catches him off guard and by the time he starts to move she's climbed out.] FUCK!

[Of course the bag of weapons is slowing her down a bit. But the minute her feet hit the snow she's off running, lugging the bag with her.]

I think...most of them are human-ish.

[And it's clear in her voice how much she hates that]

[She shakes her head, moving toward the door.]
