49th Slay [Video]

[Buffy is sitting at the island in her kitchen. There are an assortment of breads scattered around the top of the island. Buffy is sitting with her chin propped up in one hand, a pout on her face.]

My kingdom for a yogurt or...grapefruit. I like grapefruit. I wonder if the City would be sympathetic if I told them I'd just started a low carbs diet.

Making the best of it?

It's always been a dream o' mine to figure out what drinking bread'd be like.

That's the City for you. Making dreams come true since...I have no idea but you know...not important to the point just to he saying which I've totally murdered by now.

[ Laughing. ] I think I caught the gist.

Oh good. I was hoping you would. Congratulations on receiving a level one 'Understanding Buffy' merit badge.

Now I just need a scarf to sew it into.

Hang on to it. Scarf is actually level 3 of the Buffy Merit system. A stripey one.

[You make her smile a lot, Bucky.]

Well then, ma'am, it'll be my honour to keep working at gaining those merits.

I'm gonna need your name to put on your scarf. And please, just Buffy otherwise I start going into this paranoid thing that I've got Mom hair and no one's told me.

Bucky, an’ I think I met your sister t’other day. She was telling me we’d start a weird club with our names.

That sounds like Dawn but she kind of has a point. There could be tee shirts, buttons and club meetings with cookies.

Sounds like we'd have a right ol' thing going there. Weird names united. Though mine's kinda a cheat, nickname come real name kinda thing. My parents gave me a crap middle name.

So in the best interest of our new found club, going to tell me what it's short for?

Mine's just Buffy and my middle name is kind of boring, Anne.

Okay, but keep it close to the chest, right? [ Pause for effect. ] Buchanan. 'Course my first name's James, but that was also my dad's so everyone calls me Bucky.

[She puts her hand against her chest dramatically] Right next to my heart. [And some giggles.] Okay so Buchanan is...it could be worse but I understand the Bucky now. It's kind of better than Junior or Three.

Steve started it, mostly 'cause it was easier to shout when we were fightin'.

You guys end up fighting a lot? [This piques her interest because Buffy spends a good deal of her time fighting; it's a different sort of fighting but still fighting.]

Pretty much, we lived in a rough neighbourhood, gotta be fast with your fists to get going down there. New York’s my home, but she sure is mean.

[New York in her world is full of vampires and while she's fairly sure that she and Bucky are talking about two different kinds of rough. Still...]

I've been there once or twice. You have to be careful.

She's still the best place t'be, but the Depression left a ton of people real wound up tight. Ain't really the same.

The depression? As in The Great? [Okay, yes. Buffy knows that people come from all over and all sorts of times but she hasn't really talked to someone much that comes from that far behind her in time.]

Well, weren’t nothing great about it, but I hear that’s what they’re calling it now. Land of the plenty turned to dust and nobody knowin’ what to do about it.

It gets better? Well and then it gets--but better. Never like it was then. I don't think. At least that's what people say.

Don’t seem like it. [ He gives a laugh, but it’s not exactly a happy sound. ] It’s fine by me, I ain’t exactly been back a lot.

I'm from a lot further in the future. Promise. It gets better.
