26/11/07 16:00“So, you’re asking Abi to Prom, right?” Buffy said as she carried two cups of coffee over to Riley. She sat down in the chair across from him and handed one cup to him.
“What?”
“You heard me. You’re going to ask Abi to the prom, right?” Buffy said, fixing him with a look. She phrased it as a question but her tone clearly made it an order.
“I…uhm…I don’t know her that well. We’re just friends,” Riley excused.
Buffy rolled her eyes and set her coffee on the end table next to her. “What’s the problem? You can’t take a friend to a dance? And honestly, look at the girl. She’s drop dead gorgeous, you’re a hottie in a tux. You two should go. Together. And you should ask. A girl likes to be asked.”
Riley sighed and took a sip of his coffee. “Don’t get me wrong. She’s beautiful but…we’re running partners.”
“Exactly!” Buffy sighed. “You two get along. You’d have fun. She’d have fun and I’m on a mission to get her a life. Going to Prom is part of a life. I’m willing to bet money she’s never gone to a dance. I want you to take her. I’m not going to take no for an answer.”
“Who are you going with?” Riley responded.
“Oh no, this is not about me,” Buffy corrected him. “This is about you and about Abi. You don’t have to get into a relationship with her. You just have to take her to Prom, be nice and give her a really great night. Buy some flowers, open her doors, and dance with her. You can dance.”
“Yes, I can dance,” Riley responded. He didn’t tell her that he’d learned how for Sam. It was one of the few ‘normal’ couple things they’d done.
“Then what’s the problem?” Buffy asked.
Riley shook his head, grinning. “I just haven’t dated much since Sam.”
“And it’s been…” Buffy said.
“Two years.”
Buffy nodded. “It’s about time then and this is a slow start. Abi hasn’t dated much at all. Mostly I just want her to go to Prom with a guy who gets it right.” She smiled at Riley, reached over and ruffled a hand through his hair. “You get it right.”
“Thanks,” Riley said, smiling softly at her. “Okay. I’ll ask and I’ll take but if she turns me down, you’re going to be stuck with me.”
“She won’t but if she does, things don’t end up so bad for me,” Buffy smirked.
“Are you going?” Riley asked.
“Yeah…chaperone…make sure hell hounds don’t attack,” Buffy smiled. “I expect you to save me a dance.”
“Will do,” Riley nodded. He hesitated, about to imply that she wasn’t going with someone because Angel wasn’t there. They were doing well. He didn’t want to ruin that.
“You should go with someone,” he told her.
Buffy shrugged. “Maybe…I don’t know. We’ll see. In any case, I’m good with stag. Took a while to get to that place so I’m going to revel in it for a little while.”
“So am I excused?” Riley joked.
Buffy stuck her tongue out at Riley. “You’re excused. Ad though. Write it in.”
Riley saluted her and Buffy smirked at him. “Drink your coffee,” she told him.
“What?”
