Beyond the Law, You're the Vigilante Hero

Vigilantes, or street crusaders, work in a world of mortal men where crime is a huge problem. Anti-heroes that work outside formal law also fall into this category. Vigilantes have had intense training to make them capable in dealing with common criminials or violent mob bosses. They are less concerned with cosmic problems and more with punishing criminals or bringing them to the police for sentencing. Sometimes their powers can come from an accident which allowed them to dip themselves into the underworld and weed out its most nasty criminals.

The Good: You get your jollies from laying the beatdown on thugs and gangsters, which in all reality need a beating. The local city is safer with you around, no question about it. You can think on your feet, especially if a criminial pulls a knife on you or wants to get his gang to jump you all at once.

The Bad: People have a hard time distinguishing you from other thugs and criminals, so you don't get recognition. Especially if you just started your career. Your powers are good but nothing monumental. You are trained and limited to fighting gangsters. Pray that the cosmic villain Darkseid never makes a visit to your city. You wouldn't stand a chance.

Examples: Spider-Man, Batman, Daredevil

She stretches her leg, toe pointing and a sleepy smile curves her lips as she presses her foot against his calf. The cool of his skin seeps through her, peace sweeping through her. His nose is nestled in her hair at the back of her neck and occasionally she feels him loose an unnecessary exhalation against her skin. He smells cold and dry, a little earthy blended with the scent of leather and tinged with something spicy metallic she knows is blood.

She stretches again, waking him up and his hand glides over her hip and across her ribs, eliciting a soft laugh bubbling from her lips. She keeps her eyes closed, holding onto the illusion a little while longer. He nibbles at her shoulder and she can feel the tension coil inside of her. She starts counting backwards in her mind because she knows he’s going to ruin it.

His lips and blunt teeth nip at her neck and her eyes fly open.

“Don’t.” The word is pointed and hard, colder than his skin could ever be. It shatters the illusion thoroughly and disgust rolls through her from the inside out. She slips out of bed, leaving the blankets, the sheets and the vampire tangled among them.

“Could stay a bit longer, Pet.”

“We’re not that domestic, Spike,” she says as she gets dressed.

“M’not him. That’s it, innit it? That’s why you keep me away from your neck and you don’t stay all night.”

Buffy sighs because she doesn’t want to have this discussion, not with Spike, not with anyone and certainly not now. “It wasn’t exactly a love bite, Spike. He was dying. I saved him. End of story. I don’t like you near my neck because I’m a vampire slayer. Bad PR if I’ve got vamp bites on my neck.”

The truth is something much closer to his words and they both know it. She doesn’t say goodbye when she leaves and she doesn’t linger or make promises about always. She just leaves because he’s not the man she wants him to be. He’s just as close as she can get to that man.
